Prof. Dr. Fisun Akdeniz: Psychiatrist, Psychotherapist
After graduating from Ege University Faculty of Medicine (1984–1990), she completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Buca Social Security Hospital (1990–1991) and a residency in Psychiatry at Ege University (1991–1996). In 1999, she served as a visiting researcher at the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health. In 2003, she earned a Master of Science degree with a thesis in Affective Neuroscience from Maastricht University in the Netherlands. She was appointed Associate Professor in May 2004 and became Professor of Psychiatry in January 2011. In February 2015, she retired from Ege University Faculty of Medicine and began working in private practice.
She has completed training programs in psychodrama, analytic group therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness-Based therapies and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), both in Turkey and abroad.
In addition to her clinical practice in individual psychotherapy, she has collaborated extensively with the pharmaceutical industry on various joint projects. These include organizing numerous psychiatry-related educational groups and courses, conducting training programs on effective speaking techniques, developing documentary film projects (including scriptwriting and production of films on Sylvia Plath and Vivien Leigh), and managing the YouTube channel Psikoterapivemindfulness.
She is the author of two books: Rapid Cycling and Depression in 100 Pages(published by İş Bankası Publishing).
She has published nearly fifty articles in English and Turkish on depression, bipolar disorder, and women’s mental health, along with two books, eight book chapters, and four edited books. She delivers lectures nationally and internationally on bipolar disorder, depression, and women’s mental health.
She currently practices as an independent physician in İzmir and organizes workshops and group therapies focused on Mindfulness and Self-Compassion.
